BallotReady creates nonpartisan voter guides so voters know what they’re voting for every election. Three years old, BallotReady has received funding from the University of Chicago, the Knight Foundation, and the National Science Foundation, and we have a fantastic nonpartisan board of advisors led by David Axelrod and Mike Murphy. BallotReady is a past winner of a Chicago Innovation Award, Builtin’s Moxie Award, and a two-time finalist for startup of the year. In 2018, BallotReady was live nationwide, covering 94,000 candidates and reaching over 7 million voters through our sites.

About the Role

BallotReady works with advocacy groups, campaigns, unions, and PACs to help them inform and mobilize their members. We create branded digital tools, including custom voter guides, slate cards, make a plan to vote tools, and candidate recruitment platforms for our partners, powered by the most comprehensive database to local politics. 

The Manager of Business Development and Partnerships will be responsible for leading the BallotReady sales department and catalyzing growth in order to meet our goals for scale, learning, and impact in 2019 and 2020. This includes:

Sales Operations

  • Developing lists of prospects, leading demos, writing proposals, and closing deals

  • Setting revenue targets, monitoring sales funnels, and tracking key performance indicators in order to meet quarterly goals

  • Hiring, training, and managing BallotReady’s sales team

  • Representing BallotReady at conferences, panels, and other promotional events

  • Building and maintaining strong, long-lasting relationships with partners

Sales Strategy

  • Establishing the vision for the sales department, including quarterly and annual big goals, and communicating direction to larger team

  • Devising and implementing BallotReady’s growth strategy for 2019 and 2020
    Designing and testing new methods for lead generation, including cold outreach and inbound marketing 

  • Developing processes to streamline sales operations, shorten the sales cycle, and increase efficiency and effectiveness

  • Spearheading plans for selling to presidential campaigns

We have ambitious goals for 2020. The coming presidential election represents an enormous opportunity to generate revenue, support hundreds of customers, and inform 50 million voters. The Business Development and Partnerships Director will be directly responsible for leading the department through an incredible period of high impact and high growth.

Drive: In our experience, sales requires a hunger for hunting down and closing deals. Some days it necessitates cold-calling candidates, navigating a long list of campaign finance disclosures, and dealing with rejection. But we love the feeling of closing a deal and solving a problem for a campaign, and we’re looking for a leader who share our enthusiasm for beating our monthly goals and winning over a difficult client. 

Data: We’ve found that successful sales are built from disciplined use of data. We are meticulous about keeping our deals up-to-date in our CRM, and we love to run experiments like A/B testing email subject lines and measuring the results. 

Accountability: At BallotReady, we’re strong believers in flexibility in exchange for accountability. We trust our team to understand our goals and allocate their time accordingly - that’s why we’re looking for candidates with strong communication, organization, and self-reflection in order to manage multiple deadlines without a lot of oversight.
